Terms of service

Last updated 13 October 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Russell Groves, who runs ResumeGenie ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using ResumeGenie, its website at resumegenie.dev or its MCP server at mcp.resumegenie.dev, you accept them. If you start or administer an agency, you accept them for the agency too, and confirm you may. Our privacy policy explains how we handle personal information and is part of these terms.

The service

ResumeGenie keeps a record of your experience and uses AI to draft a resume tailored to each job you apply for, which you then review, edit and download. Agencies use it to do the same for their candidates.

ResumeGenie is free for now. Free use has limits, such as a number of AI calls per day, which we may change. If we introduce paid features, we will tell you and publish their terms before anything costs you money; nothing you use for free today will start charging you without your agreement.

Your account

  • You must be 16 or older.
  • Use your own name and an email address you control. An account is for one person.
  • Keep your sign-in secure: your Google, Microsoft or GitHub account, your agency's single sign-on and your passkeys. You are responsible for what is done through your account, including by an AI app you connect.

Your content

What you put into ResumeGenie, your record, uploads, job adverts and resumes, stays yours. You give us permission to store, copy, process and send it to the services named in our privacy policy, only as needed to run ResumeGenie for you. We claim no ownership of it and never use it to train AI models. The resumes ResumeGenie writes for you are yours to use as you wish.

You confirm that you have the right to everything you put in, and that putting it in breaks no law and no one else's rights.

AI output is a draft you must check

ResumeGenie's resumes are written by AI, and AI makes mistakes: it can get facts wrong, leave out what matters, overstate what you did or word things in a way you would not. ResumeGenie shows you what the AI changed and what it left out, and lets you edit every part of the resume's content before you use it, but it cannot know what is true about you. That is up to you.

  • Read every resume in full and correct it before you send it to anyone.
  • What you send, and any decision you or anyone else makes because of it, is your responsibility, not ours.
  • We do not promise that a resume will be accurate, complete, suited to a job, or get you an interview or a job.

What you may not do

  • Invent or inflate qualifications, experience, employers, dates or anything else, or use ResumeGenie to mislead an employer.
  • Put in another person's information without their agreement. An agency confirms each candidate's agreement before adding them.
  • Scrape ResumeGenie, get around its limits or security, overload it, probe it for weaknesses, or reach anyone else's information.
  • Upload anything unlawful, malicious, or that infringes someone else's rights.
  • Resell ResumeGenie or offer it to others as your own service, except as an agency for its candidates.

Agencies

An agency is a workspace a business uses for its candidates. The person who starts it, and every admin, accepts these terms for the agency. The agency is responsible for its members and for what they do in it, including who it invites, the single sign-on it sets up and the branding it puts on resumes, which must be its own or used with permission.

Candidates' information

For its candidates' information, the agency is the responsible party under POPIA and the controller under the GDPR, and we are its operator (processor). The agency:

  • has a lawful basis, such as the candidate's agreement, before adding a candidate, and confirms it when it does;
  • tells its candidates how it uses their information, including that it uses ResumeGenie;
  • handles its candidates' requests about their information, and deletes a candidate when it should;
  • is responsible, as controller, for its use of a candidate's own record once the candidate grants it access;
  • puts in no special personal information (such as health, race or religion) or identity numbers unless the law allows it and it is needed;
  • will cover our losses from claims caused by its breach of these terms or of data protection law, to the extent the law allows.

How we process it for the agency

For candidates' information, these terms are our data processing agreement with the agency. We:

  • process it only to run ResumeGenie for the agency, as the agency directs through its use of the app, unless the law requires otherwise (and then tell the agency, unless the law forbids it); this includes sending it outside South Africa and the EU only to the services and countries our privacy policy names, as its "Information across borders" section describes;
  • keep it confidential, make sure anyone we allow to process it is bound to confidentiality, and disclose it to no one except as these terms allow or the law requires;
  • maintain appropriate, reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect it against loss, damage and unauthorised access or processing, including those our privacy policy's Security section describes;
  • use only netcup (our hosting), OpenRouter (and the model providers it routes to) and Mistral, as our privacy policy names them, to process it; before adding or replacing one, we tell each agency's admins at least 30 days ahead and update the privacy policy, and an agency that objects may stop using ResumeGenie and delete its workspace;
  • help the agency answer its candidates' requests and meet its own obligations, on security, breach notification, impact assessments and consulting a regulator, as far as we reasonably can;
  • tell the agency immediately, and in any case without undue delay, when we have reasonable grounds to believe its information has been accessed or acquired by someone unauthorised, with what we know about it;
  • when the agency stops using ResumeGenie, give it a copy of its candidates' information if it asks first (write to russ@resumegenie.dev), and delete it when the agency deletes the candidate or its workspace, except from server logs (up to 30 days), Mistral's abuse checks (up to 30 days) and backups (replaced within 6 months), as our privacy policy describes;
  • give the agency the information it reasonably needs to show that these commitments are kept, and allow for and contribute to audits, including inspections, by the agency or an auditor it mandates, on reasonable notice and at its cost; and tell it at once if we think an instruction of its breaks data protection law.

The processing concerns the agency's candidates and members; the information is what the agency and its candidates put in: names, contact details, work history, education, skills and the job adverts and resumes around them. It lasts as long as the agency uses ResumeGenie, and consists of storing it, sending it to AI models to read uploads and write resumes, and rendering resumes.

AI apps you connect

If you connect an AI app, such as Claude, through our MCP server, it acts for you with the access you approve. You are responsible for what it does with that access, and its provider's own terms govern what happens to what it reads. You can disconnect it on Account at any time.

Other services

Signing in with Google, Microsoft, GitHub or your agency's single sign-on, and the Feedback form, are run by others under their own terms. We are not responsible for them.

Changes to ResumeGenie

We may change, add or remove features, or stop running ResumeGenie. Before we stop it altogether we will give you at least 30 days' notice, so you can download your information (an agency can ask us for a copy of its information).

Ending your account

You can stop using ResumeGenie at any time, and delete your account on Account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts ResumeGenie or others at risk, or where the law requires it; we will tell you why first unless that would cause harm or the law prevents it. What happens to your information then is in our privacy policy.

No warranty

ResumeGenie is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no promises about it, including that it will be accurate, uninterrupted, free of errors or fit for any purpose, and we are not responsible for the content AI produces.

Keep your own copy of anything important, such as the resumes you download.

Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows:

  • we are not liable for any loss of opportunity, employment, income, data or reputation, or any indirect or consequential loss, nor for anything that results from a resume or other AI output, or from your relying on it;
  • our total liability to you for anything to do with ResumeGenie is limited to the greater of R1,000 and what you paid us for it in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for fraud or gross negligence, or takes away rights you have as a consumer, or under data protection law, under the law that applies to you.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa, and its courts decide disputes about them. If you are a consumer living in the European Union, you also keep the protection of your own country's mandatory law, and may bring a claim in its courts.

Changes to these terms

We will post any change here and update the date at the top. If a change takes away from your rights, we will tell you before it applies; if you keep using ResumeGenie after that, you accept it, and if you do not, you can delete your account.

The rest

These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement between us about ResumeGenie. If a part of them cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a part straight away does not mean we give it up. You may not transfer these terms to anyone else; we may, if ResumeGenie passes to someone who takes them on.
